When was the last time you did something you have NEVER done before? It was a few weekends ago when I got on stage and attempted five minutes of standup comedy. People often say I’m funny, and I reply, “Looks aren’t everything.”
About three minutes before I had to go backstage so they could introduce me, the person who was going to introduce me (and asked me to do it) asked me, “How are you doing?” I told him, “I love you, and I hate you. I am SOOOO out of my comfort zone.”
I went backstage and just focused on how I felt. It was weird. By that, I mean I didn’t know how I felt. Sure, I was nervous, anxious, etc., but the fear of the unknown made it different. So instead of freaking out, I just took a second to FEEL. I somewhat felt like I was going to blow up. Just BOOM, and then someone going, “Oh, now who is going to clean that up…”
It reminded me of the first time I ate at a Jamaican restaurant that moved into town. I took my first bite, and my brain asked, “Do we like this?” and the answer was, “Give me a minute, I’ve NEVER tasted anything like this… hmmmm”
At 6:59, I had sixty seconds to go. I smiled at myself and my sweaty hands. I thought of what I would say to myself if I were a client. I took another second to try and make what I call a “brain tattoo,” so I could remember how uncomfortable this felt. This way, I can better empathize with new wanna-be podcasters. It was such a different feeling. Remember different doesn’t mean bad. It’s just different.
Then I heard the phrase, “Let’s give it up for Dave Jackson….”
I didn’t blow up.
More on how I did in the future.
